Focus and Scope

Medimay journal is the continuation of the Havana Medical Sciences magazine, which began its publication under the sponsorships of the Provincial Center for Medical Sciences Information (CPICM by its Spanish initials), of the Havana province in 1987 and was published until 1991.

The project to register it as an electronic publication began in 1997, and materialized in 1999 assuming the name of Medimay in 2016 to represent the identity of the Mayabeque province.

Since its creation, it has contributed to disseminate scientific knowledge in the field of health sciences through its access on the web and visibility in national and international databases.

Medimay is the official organ of scientific spreading of the Faculty of Medical Sciences of Mayabeque. It publishes serial numbers quarterly. It is an open access journal edited by the CPICM, under the principle of making research freely available to the public, which encourages a greater exchange of global knowledge, so authors and readers are allowed to copy, reuse and distribute its contents as long as they maintain the recognition of their authors, and no commercial use is made of the works.

The types of articles to be published are: editorials, original and review articles, brief communications, case presentations, current affairs, letters to the editor, up-to-date information, public health personalities, and historical facts. For the approval of the articles, the relevance and importance of the research and its impact on knowledge in the health sciences.

The publication rules can be consulted online, before submitting an article, in the Guidelines for authors. Manuscripts and their authors receive appropriate ethical treatment in the editorial process and rejected articles are reported to the authors.

This magazine does not accept publicity materials, nor works that are under the consideration of the Editorial Board of another national or foreign magazine. The people subscribed to it will receive, via email, a notification of the works published once each issue is published.

Medimay journal assumes the certification requirements established for scientific-technological serial publications, provided by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment of the Republic of Cuba and the uniform requirements for the submission of biomedical journal manuscripts: writing and editing of biomedical publications of the International Committee of Medical Journals (www.icmje.com) and promotes the application of international standards or established good practices, both for the preparation of manuscripts and their publication.

The manuscripts accepted remain property of the journal and, therefore, may not be submitted to another journal for publication, except with the properly authorization from the Editorial Committee.

The Editorial Committee reserves the right to introduce style changes and/or delimit the texts that require it, committing to respect the original content.

Any ethical violation related to the publication will be solved using the protocols established by the International Committee on Ethics in Scientific Publication (COPE).

Medimay promotes the openness of research data and invites authors to publicly place and reference the data they consider in their research so that it can be shared and reused, which facilitates transparency and credibility.

Peer Review Process

Peer review process

Medimay Journal follows the double-blind peer review policy, a process in which neither the reviewer nor the author have any information that allows them to identify themselves; Special care is maintained with the established ethical standards to avoid conflicts of interest. The journal has the collaboration of external evaluators from outside the publishing institution.

The article evaluation process is fully automated and the author will be able to receive and exchange with the editorial committee, as well as follow up on the evolution of the process, necessarily through the electronic platform (Open Journal System).

Each article is submitted to the consideration of two or more arbiters who issue the verdict of the scientific articles sent by the authors, which meet the publication standards. The author responsible for the correspondence will receive the notification of receipt of the manuscript, with his identification number, which he must use from that moment on in the correspondence.

The articles are received by the director, who performs the first reading and defines whether the manuscript meets the general requirements according to the journal's publication standards; then the works are derived to the section editors and these to each one of the pairs of referees or trios, in case a third evaluation is necessary.

If the submitted articles fail to meet these requirements, present methodological deficiencies or in content, form and structure according to the journal's publication standards, the director or editor-in-chief determines whether to continue the editorial course or reject it. In this case, it will be returned to the author for correction before beginning the evaluation process.

The maximum time agreed by Medimay for the receipt of the articles is 15 working days. The date of receipt of the article will not begin to count until its correct reception. It is communicated to the responsible author so that he can correct these first indications. Peer review will only begin for manuscripts that meet the required requirements.

The director or editor-in-chief and/or the section editor maintain contact with the reviewers, the latter selects the pairs of evaluators and controls the times and the evaluation cycle. First, they are asked about their availability for the review and, once accepted, they are given a period of 21 days, extendable only upon express request. If necessary, a third evaluator will be requested. The editor-in-chief receives feedback by systematically contacting them and externally through the criteria of the users.

In all cases, the editorial committee will consider the value of the proposed papers for the development of the National Health System, regardless of the national or foreign origin of the authors or their belonging to one organization or another.

-Compliance with the methodological requirements of the different types of articles.

- Originality, novelty and validity of the proposed study.

- Methodological quality and content of the work.

- Compliance with ethical standards.

- 70% of the updated bibliographical references.

- Relevance for research or practice in the treated field.

Each arbiter is sent a guide to facilitate the review, where they must define one of the following categories: accept this submission, accepted with modifications, resubmit for evaluation, do not accept it to be published.

The observations and suggestions of the Editorial Board and the reviewers will be sent to the responsible author, who must respond as soon as possible (maximum one month). The final decision on the publication of the manuscript corresponds to the editorial committee.

Once the manuscript is accepted, it is sent to the copy-editors and later goes to layout to prepare the proofs. Subsequently, the Editorial Committee designates in which issue of the journal each manuscript is included. Finally, the number is approved in a full meeting of the editorial committee led by the director or editor-in-chief of the journal and, failing that, by the secretary or executive editor.

Evaluation cycle of articles and participants.

Arbiters and editors participate in the evaluation process. The evaluation period must not exceed 90 days; within this period the authors will be informed about the conclusion of the evaluation of the articles; they have 30 days to make the corrections suggested by the arbiters or editors, otherwise, the editorial committee has the authority to withdraw the article from the journal for violation of what is established.

Unpublished works and documents that have been previously deposited in recognized Preprints servers of the specialty (SciELO Preprints, PMC, MedRxiv,) are accepted. If it has been made public, the author has the duty to communicate it.

The decision of acceptance, the acceptance with modifications or rejection, is communicated by the editor to the author. In case of rejection, the editor sends the contact author the evaluation results with the reviewers' suggestions regarding improvements that could be applied to the article. If accepted, the article goes to the editorial processing stage.

The maximum time for the publication of an article from its submission, if accepted, is one year.
