Introduction:
Infertility is the inability to conceive a pregnancy after one year of frequent intercourse without contraception. In recent decades, an increase in the prevalence of infertility in the population has been observed.
Objective:
To describe the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of the women treated in the infertility and assisted reproduction consultation.
Methods:
Descriptive cross-sectional study, during the period from January to July 2021. Of the 486 women who attended the consultation, a sample of 482 was selected by non-probabilistic sampling. The variables of age, the type of infertility, the time of infertility, the causal factors and the nutritional status of the patients were evaluated. The primary data was obtained from a documentary review of the medical records. The information was processed through the SSPS version 21.0 program.
Results:
Women between 30 and 39 years predominated, with 59.7%, with primary infertility 63.1% and with more than three years of evolution 61.2%. Among the causal factors, pregnancy interruptions predominated in 25.3%, presence of polycystic ovary in 20.3% and vaginal infection in 17.4%. 50% of the women presented adequate weight.
Conclusions:
Establishing a causal diagnosis of infertility in infertile couples, after identifying the factors that affect fertility, is the greatest challenge faced by Primary Health Care physicians.
