Periodontal disease in diabetic patients

Introduction:
Periodontal disease and diabetes mellitus are two conditions of multifactorial origin that are associated in a bidirectional manner. Currently, there is a large number of diabetic patients who suffer from periodontal disease.
Objective:
To describe the behavior of periodontal disease in diabetic patients.
Methods:
A descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out at the Antonio Briones Montoto Stomatology Clinic, in Pinar del Río municipality, in the period from December 2021 to March 2022. The universe consisted of 27 diabetic patients, treated in consultation of periodontics, a sample of 25 patients with periodontal disease who fit the selection criteria was selected through non-probabilistic, intentional sampling. The data were processed in a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and the results were represented in statistical tables; the percentage was used as a summary measure.
Results:
The most affected age group was that of 19 to 34 years old, with 32%. The predominant periodontal disease was periodontitis in 64%. The female sex stood out with 56%. Hyperglycemia values decreased to 28% after periodontal treatment. 68% of the patients had an inadequate level of knowledge about the relationship between diabetes and oral health.
Conclusions:
The predominant disease is periodontitis, the most affected are the female sex, hyperglycemia values decrease after treatment and an inadequate level of knowledge prevails.
