Abstract

Introduction: Ischemic heart disease, together with other diseases of vascular origin, are the main causes of death at an international level. Understanding the current molecular and vascular phenomena that influence the pathophysiology of these entities is essential. Objective: To describe molecular and vascular phenomena involved in the pathophysiology of acute myocardial infarction. Methods: A critical review article was developed using the following databases: Pubmed, SciELO, Elsevier, Springer Science, Medline and Cochrane Plus. Forty-five articles were identified and reviewed, allowing for a historical-logical analysis of the pathophysiology of ischemic heart disease. Conclusions: There are molecular phenomena that alter cellular homeostasis by modifying blood flow and the reperfusion process itself. Endothelial dysfunction is the most important stage in the process of vascular involvement that causes the formation of atheroma plaque and occlusion of the blood vessel with mechanical interruption of the vessel.
